Expression of Interest – Policy and Research Positions

Position Summary

Yoorrook is looking for committed and flexible Research and Policy professionals across various areas of expertise and experience levels, to assist in the operation of the Commission. Yoorrook’s Research and Policy staff will conduct, analyse and synthesise research from a wide range of sources, draft issues and options papers and draft recommendations to contribute to Yoorrook’s interim and final reports.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest to build on our newly created strategic policy and research team.  Over the life of the Commission, we anticipate that we will have short and longer term contracts available as we progress along the truth-telling journey.

The roles require research and policy skills and we are looking for people with varying degrees of knowledge and expertise in:

  • awareness and understanding of the history and culture of First Peoples in Victoria
  • An understanding of colonisation and the historical and current impacts on First Peoples
  • Awareness of the current Aboriginal Affairs legal/policy environment and understanding of government and reform processes
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary or Indigenous-led research projects.

Successful candidates must have the ability to work in a complex, sensitive, and fast paced environment and to work flexibly and collaboratively to achieve Yoorrook’s mandate.  In return you will be joining a ground breaking truth telling process, the first of it’s kind in Australia.

What will you bring?

We will be looking for candidates who have the attributes as broadly outlined below:

  1. Sound written communication skills to ensure products (emails, briefs, papers) are clear, accurate and concise and contain the information necessary to achieve their purpose and meet audience needs.
  2. Research and policy skills, including ability to synthesise information from a range of sources and events, analysing and critically evaluating information and the potential implications and risks of proposed policy options, and keeping up-to-date with a broad range of contemporary issues.
  3. Sound interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members and others across Yoorrook and to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities with the ability to meet deadlines while working in pressured situations.
  5. Experience working with First Peoples communities and organisations, and/or understanding and awareness of First Peoples’ self-determination and cultural safety.
  6. Relevant qualification such as social sciences, public administration or law.
