Summary
The Australian Community Support Organisation works with people at risk of entering or who have already entered the justice system. It provides a range of services including mental health, alcohol and other drug treatment, intensive residential support, housing and employment.
This submission examines the overrepresentation of First Peoples in the correctional system, the ways in which the system is not culturally appropriate by design and can often serve to perpetuate Indigenous disadvantage. The submission highlights several promising programs and practices that aim to creating change.
