Community make history at Barrbunin Beek

Community connected with Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place in Heidelberg met with Yoorrook’s truth-receivers in a fireside yarning session this month.

Together we spent the day listening to and recording truths of community members, including people’s experiences of racism in criminal justice systems, of the limitations of our education system, of disconnection to culture, and of the importance of gathering places like Barrbunin Beek to help foster connection and health.

The day kicked off with a Q&A session where people learnt more about Yoorrook and the importance of truth telling. Across the day there was plenty of food and opportunity for community to share their truths privately and individually, and also in different group settings.

It was a powerful day of listening for Yoorrook. The stories told by community members will now inform both the official public record in Victoria and recommendations to systems and laws.

Our thanks to Barrbunin Beek for putting on such an important day.

There is still time to make history by making a submission to Yoorrook.

First Peoples can make supported submissions, with direct support from Yoorrook truth-receivers.

We are also encouraging all Victorians to make a submission as well.

People and organisations can come forward to share information as part of Yoorrook’s truth-telling process.

Submissions close 22 November 2024.
