The true path forward

When we talk together about the truth of our shared history, we can walk together to a better shared future. For First Peoples and for all Victorians.

The true path forward starts here

You’re invited to join the true path forward.

A path that allows all Victorians to learn the truth of our shared history, and walk together to transform our shared future.

Yoorrook Justice Commission is Victoria's first formal truth-telling process.

Through Yoorrook, meaning 'truth' in Wamba Wamba language, Victorians have shared their truths on the impacts of colonisation on First Peoples, and the strength and resistance shown.

Now we invite you to listen and learn from the powerful evidence Yoorrook has heard.

We can't change the truth of our past, but by accepting and understanding it, we can walk together to a better shared future. For First Peoples and for all Victorians.

The true path forward starts here. We invite you to join it.

AUNTY STEPHANIE CHARLES, WEMBA WEMBA / KOORI COURT ELDER, SWAN HILL

“I brought up a lot of my grandkids myself as a single mother and I'm still looking after a grandchild today. My son, he came to my home one night and I’m still livin’ where he came and he was drunk and stoned. And I said to him, because I had my cousins and her kids and I said, 'Son, you can't be here because because you’re drunk and you’re stoned.' He said okay mom. He gave us all a kiss and he went. He got to the mailbox and he said 'I love you.' Sang out, 'I love you mom.'”

“They may not have killed an Aboriginal but they certainly had workers who worked for them that did. It was a slaughter. They came across some sheep that got stolen and they looked for the sheep and ... I'm amazed you know, I've worked a lot with sheep in my life and there's always these big numbers, mass numbers of sheep and cattle being stolen by Aboriginals.”

UNCLE COLIN WALKER, YORTA YORTA ELDER, CUMMERAGUNJA

“I spent 16 years sitting on the Koori Courts. I'm interested in Justice. I know we said in the Koori courts that you're responsible for your own actions. You know, we don't feather 'em up. We spoke to them the way our elders spoke to us. We hurt them with words.”

UNCLE PAUL BRIGGS, YORTA YORTA, BARMAH

“I was involved in an opening of an art exhibition. After I spoke, an old fella, a non-Aboriginal fella came up to me and we were having a talk. I knew the area where he come from and after he was talking a bit longer I knew who his family was. He was a bit teary. He said 'Paul, my grandfather used to sit me down and talk to me about going out on Yorta Yorta country hunting on weekends.”

“The mission manager would walk around with a gun standing over people, they were treated inhumanly. Mum and Dad often spoke of those times. Living on the river flats, they would have to move to higher ground when the river rose as they would often be standing in water.”
