Walking Leg: Detailed Information

This document provides key information for each section of the Walk for Truth, including start and finish locations, toilet access, FAQs, and other essential details to support your participation.

As we gather on Country, we invite you to wear your values—visibly and proudly. Whether through clothing, jewellery, artwork, or symbols, what we wear can honour culture, spark conversation, and demonstrate respect for the First Peoples and communities we walk alongside. Choose attire that reflects your commitment to truth-telling, justice and solidarity.

Leg one - Portland

Day 1: Sunday 25th May - Portland to Convincing Grounds

Walk Information: The Walk for Truth begins where colonisation began in Victoria. Join Deputy Chair Commissioner Travis Lovett for the official launch at the Portland Drill Hall, Bentinck Street Portland, for a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, speeches, and cultural activities.

The Walk will set out along the Portland foreshore, passing by several monuments on the way to Convincing Grounds, the site of the first recorded massacre in Victoria, where a closing ceremony will take place.

Launch Event: Before the Walk begins, a formal launch event will take place at 9:00 AM. The program will include a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, speeches, and other cultural activities. Held at the site where the Thistle landed in 1834, marking the beginning of colonisation in what is now known as Victoria, this launch sets the tone for the journey ahead. Join us for the first day of the Walk for Truth and hear from Commissioner Travis Lovett, a proud Kerrupmara Gunditjmara man, as he shares the inspiration and aspiration behind this 25-day, 400km journey.

Day 2: Monday 26th May - Yumbah Oval to Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Area

Event Information: On National Sorry Day and marking the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, join us for a culturally significant walk to the Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Area.

This area is a traditional meeting place and camping site for the Gunditjmara people, part of major Dreaming trails and a significant ceremonial location. Walkers will follow a short roadside route into the protected area, where they will visit a remarkable landscape featuring stone wall dams, excavated channels, and swampy depressions used to trap and farm eels. This site is evidence of one of Australia’s oldest and most sophisticated aquaculture systems, showcasing a large, settled community that sustainably farmed eels for food and trade.

The group will return to Yumbah Oval before sunset, where the day will conclude.

What else is on during the day? Morning Tea at Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre at 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM. Join for morning tea and hear from a Gunditjmara cultural guide about Tae Rak (Lake Condah) and the surrounding wetlands. The World Heritage listed site and lake is made up of 1,700 hectares of significant wetlands and stony rises, right next to the historic lava flows of Budj Bim National Park.

Day 4: Wednesday 28th May - St Patrick's Catholic Church to Port Fairy Community House

Walk Information: Meet at St Patrick's Church for a gentle walk through to the centre of Port Fairy where there will be a small community event commemorating the walkers arrival at the community house.

Members of the public are encouraged to arrive at the church early for registration.

Walking Difficulty: Easy, a mostly flat route, following town roads
Distance: Approximately 1.5 km

Leg two - Warrnambool

Day 6: Friday 30th May - Killarney Beach to Civic Green, Warrnambool

Walk Information: Take part in one of the most challenging and beautiful parts of the Walk for Truth, as Commissioner Lovett makes his way around the beaches, coastal reserves and beach side tracks to Warrnambool. All told, this will be a long and difficult day of walking, but you have options for how far you wish to walk. Walkers can choose to complete the full 19 km route or join for various sections:

  • Greers Bay (return) - 6km / 2 hours
  • Following the Basin Track, the route takes walkers from Killarney Beach to Greers Bay. Note: There is no exit point from Greers Bay. Walkers on this part of the track will have to return via the same path to leave via Killarney Beach Camp Ground.
  • to Gormons Road - 5.5km / 1.75 hours
  • Carrying on to the beach at Greers Bay, walkers will follow the beach around the point, past Tower Hill Coastal Reserve and on to the Belfast Coastal Reserve car park on Gormons Road. You can arrange to be collected from this point of the walk.
  • to Merrivale Recreation Reserve - 15.7km / 4.75 hours
  • Returning to the beach, the route follows the bay East on a long stretch toward Warrnambool, past sand dunes of the Belfast Coastal Reserve. At Levys Point, take the steep path through the sand dunes to a car park. From there, the route follows town roads and paths to the recreation reserve.
  • Merrivale Recreation Reserve to Civic Green - 3km / 0.75 hours
  • For those not keen on a long day of walking, meet at the Merrivale Recreation Reserve for the final leg through Warrnambool into the Civic Green.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate to challenging. This is a challenging day, with much of the route off road and on the beach until the Merrivale Recreation Reserve is reached.

  • Sand Art at Killarney Beach (prior to walk, 8:30 AM) - Embark on an unforgettable journey with renowned Aboriginal artist and Nyul Nyul Saltwater Man, Lowell Hunter, along the untamed shores of the Southern Ocean, where art, culture, and mindfulness converge.
  • Community event at Civic Green, Warrnambool (at the walk endpoint, 5:00 PM) - Join for an afternoon of talks, music and cultural activities to learn about the Commission’s truth-telling work, and the history and culture of the Traditional Owners of the land. Including a special musical performance by Shayne Howard.

Day 7a: Saturday 31st May - Lake Pertobe to Brierly Park

Walk Information: Meet at Portup Meeting Place on the shores of beautiful Lake Pertobe in Warrnambool for a guided walk through town, passing Moyjil and several other significant Gunditjmara sites. This is a rolling route with some gentle ascents.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate, a rolling route, with some ascents to be made, following town roads and walking paths.
Distance: Approximately 7 km

Day 7b: Saturday 31st May - Wangoom to Framlingham Aboriginal Community

Walk Information: Join Commissioner Lovett on the final stage of the day into Framlingham Aboriginal Station. The mission at Framlingham was established in 1865 by Church of England missionaries and operated for around 25 years. Aboriginal residents were denied the ability to speak language or practice cultural traditions and survived on rations. Like many other missions in Victoria, Framlingham closed in the years after the introduction of the 1886 Aborigines Protection Act. The land and mission were returned to Traditional Owners in 1970 under the Aboriginal Lands Act.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate, a mostly flat route, following narrow country back-roads that are quite remote.
Distance: Approximately 9 km

Day 8: Sunday 1st June - Mt Noorat Circuit

Walk Information: Standing some 300m above sea level, join Eastern Maar Traditional Owners and Commissioner Lovett on a guided tour of Mount Noorat from the town of Noorat.

Mount Noorat was an important meeting place for Aboriginal people prior to colonisation. The now dormant volcano, belonging to the Newer Volcanics Province of Victoria, was used to hold ceremony and for Traditional Owners to trade stones, spears and other items.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging, this route is short, but includes a steep walk up to the peak of Mt Noorat via a walking trail. Ascend and descend with care.
Distance: Approximately 5 km

Day 12: Thursday 5th June - Colac Western Reserve to Memorial Square

Walk Information: Show your support for Commissioner Lovett after a long day of walking, by joining him at the edge of town, walking from Colac Western Reserve into Memorial Square.

Walking Difficulty: Easy, a mostly flat route, following town roads.
Distance: Approximately 3 km

Leg three - Colac

Day 14: Saturday 7th June - Birregurra loop

Walk Information: Enjoy a short, leisurely walk through Birregurra, stopping at several sites of significance to First Peoples that reference the nearby Buntingdale Aboriginal Mission. The walk will begin and end at the Birregurra Football Reserve (adjacent to the public toilets).

Day 16: Monday 9th June (Public Holiday) - Modewarre Memorial Hall to Moriac

Walk Information: Join us in the early afternoon beside the Modewarre Memorial Hall and Reserve for a gentle walk through the countryside to Newling Reserve in Moriac, where the day’s journey will conclude.

Walking Difficulty: Easy to Moderate, a mostly flat route, following through parklands
Distance: Approximately 4 km, a mostly flat route.

Day 17: Tuesday 10th June - Waurn Ponds Library to Belmont Common

Walk Information: Beginning early afternoon, walk through the lovely greenscape of the Waurn Ponds Creek Trail, along through Belmont, then through various Community Sporting grounds until we join the great Barwon River ending at the popular anglers boat ramp.

Leg four - Geelong

Day 19a: Thursday 12th June - Transvaal Square, Geelong to Saint Helens Park

Walk Information: Join Travis on the first of two public legs of the Walk for Truth this day. The first leg is a morning walk along the Geelong Foreshore footpaths, gathering at Transvaal Square before heading out to Saint Helens Park.

Walking Difficulty: Easy to Moderate, mostly flat route, following walking paths on the foreshore through the city roads.
Distance: Approximately 3.6 km

Walk Information: Join Commissioner Travis Lovett for the second public walk of the day, following the Hovell Creek Trail from its southern end near the Lagoon Boat Club. The walk concludes at Austin Park, beside the Lara Library.

Walking Difficulty: Easy to Moderate, mostly flat route, following walking paths on the foreshore through the city roads.
Distance: Approximately 6.5 km

Day 20: Friday 13th June - Harpley Town Centre to Wyndham Vale South Oval

Walk Information: As the city comes into view after a long week of walking, show your support for Commissioner Travis Lovett by joining him for the final stretch of the day from Harpley Town Centre to Wyndham Vale South Oval—just ahead of a well-earned rest day.

Distance: Approximately 2.5 km

Day 22: Sunday 15th June - Uni of Melbourne, Werribee Campus to Whitten Oval

Walk Information: Join Commissioner Travis Lovett on one of the longest and most significant stages of the Walk for Truth, as he approaches the city through Melbourne’s western suburbs.

The day begins at the University of Melbourne’s Werribee Campus, where walkers are invited to gather early for coffee, pastries, and a welcome from Commissioner Lovett and University leaders.

From there, the walk follows the Federation Trail to McIvor Reserve in Yarraville, before continuing through residential streets to Whitten Oval. Along the way, a short detour will be made to pay respects at the former residence of William Cooper.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging, a mostly flat route, following the federation trail
Distance: Approximately 26 km

Train: 13 minute walk from Hoppers Crossing station to Melbourne Uni Werribee Campus

Leg five - Footscray

Day 24: Tuesday 17th June - Footscray Park to the Shrine of Remembrance

Walk Information: Join Commissioner Travis Lovett at Footscray Park for the final approach into the city. This stage follows the Maribyrnong River pathway, crosses the Moonee Ponds Creek shared trail, and then follows the Birrarung (Yarra River) corridor into the heart of Melbourne, concluding at the Shrine of Remembrance.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate, the route follows walking paths and city roads. The first part of the route takes walkers over a footbridge with no wheelchair access.
Distance: Approximately 10 km

Walk Start Time: 9:30 AM
Start Location: Footscray Park, entrance off Farnsworth Ave past the Footscray City Rowing Club.

Parking: There is limited parking Victoria University or Flemington Racecourse

Train: Footscray Park is a 20 minute walk from Footscray train station

Finish Location: Shrine of Remembrance

Leg six - Parliament

Day 25: Wednesday 18th June - Shrine of Remembrance to Parliament House

Event Information: The final day of the Walk for Truth, and a short trip across Bunarong and Wurundjeri Country, as we head to Parliament House to transform the future. Meet at the Shrine of Remembrance and be welcomed onto Bunarong Country before heading toward the Birrarung, where we will be welcomed onto Wurundjeri Country.

Walking Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Distance: Approximately 5 km

Registrations Open: 8:00 AM
Walk Start Time: 8:30 AM
Location: The Shrine of Remembrance which is located on Birdwood Avenue and St Kilda Road, 1.3km from Flinders Street Railway Station. You can walk or catch a tram from the city.

Walk Finish Time (estimate): 11:30 AM
Location: Parliament House

Toilets: There will be public toilets at both the start and finish points.

Parking: The nearest car parking is on Birdwood Avenue and St Kilda Road (ticketing required). Disabled access bays are opposite the Shrine on both sides of Birdwood Avenue.

Tram: Take any southbound tram from Federation Square (except route number 1) to stop 19 Shrine of Remembrance.

What else is on during the day? On arriving at Parliament, there will be a presentation of the final Yoorrook Submission. After, you’re invited to stay in the CBD for a community celebration at Federation Square starting at 1:30 PM.
