Summary

Environmental Justice Victoria is a public interest environmental law practice. It provides legal advice and support to the community on public interest environmental issues, advocates for better environmental laws, and provides legal education to the community on environmental matters. It acts primarily for community organisations, Traditional Owners groups and NGOs on matters concerning environment and natural resources laws and policy.

This submission covers:

  • The foundational role of laws concerning land, waters and natural resources (including conservation) in contributing to and enabling the project of colonisation and historic and ongoing injustices based on that project.
  • EJA’s specific experiences and opinions arising from work and collaborations with Traditional Owners in relation to the following:
    • water resources law and management
    • public lands management
    • catchment management
    • biodiversity laws
    • mining laws
    • human rights law
